Šmarje is a settlement in the Šentjernej municipality in southeastern Slovenia. It was traditionally part of Lower Carniola and is now included in the Jugovzhodna Slovenija statistical region.[2]
The local church from which the settlement gets its name, is built on the eastern outskirts of the settlement and is dedicated to the Nativity of Mary. It belongs to the Šentjernej parish. It is an originally Gothic building remodelled in 1871. Its main altar dates to the early 18th century and the side altars are 19th century.[3]
